24 June Dear Poet: Connecting Through Poetry and Letters June 24, 2022 Arts Ed, For the Public American Academy of Poets, Appalachia, Arts Education, Dear Poet, Kari Gunter-Seymour, Letter Writing, Ohio Poet Laureate, Poet, Poetry 0 Earlier this year, Ohio’s Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour participated in Dear Poet, an educational project hosted by the Academy of American Poets for National Poetry Month in April 2022. For the project, students nationwide responded through letters to Gunter-Seymour's recitation of her poem “I Come From A Place So Deep Inside America It Can’t Be Seen.” Many letters asked questions of the Ohio poet, including about her life in Appalachian Ohio and how she finds inspiration. Others reacted with the personal connections they found in the poetry and the emotions it elicited. Gunter-Seymour wrote back to five of the students. Now, their powerful letters and her replies to each can be read at poets.org/dear-kari-gunter-seymour-2022. Listen to “I Come From A Place So Deep Inside America It Can’t Be Seen” in the video below.
