Governor DeWine Names Kari Gunter-Seymour Ohio Poet Laureate Governor Mike DeWine has named Kari Gunter-Seymour of Albany, Ohio, the state’s poet laureate. Gunter-Seymour, whose term began June 10, 2020, succeeds the state’s second poet laureate, Dave Lucas. A third-generation Athens Countian, Gunter-Seymour was named poet laureate for Athens, Ohio, in 2018-2020, and the Ohio Poet of the Year in 2020. She is the founder/executive director of the Women of Appalachia Project and a recently retired instructor in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Athens Organization Selected to Host Rural Design Workshop Led by National Endowment for the Arts An organization in Athens, Ohio, has been selected to host a multi-day design workshop focusing on rural design and creative placemaking. Part of the Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design program, a national initiative that aims to support rural communities through hands-on training and other events, the workshop in Athens will focus on the efforts to preserve and reimagine the use of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a century-old church founded in 1872 that is the last standing building in the city that was built by free-born and formerly enslaved black artisans.
