September 2007 Public Value Story

The Fitton Center for the Arts in Hamilton, Ohio offers entertainment and education in the arts. Rick Jones, Executive Director of the Fitton Center, shared with the Ohio Arts Council part of a letter the center received this year. The letter speaks of what an impact the Center’s Arts in Common program made on the writer’s children who participate in the dance program. The program helps those with financial challenges experience the arts. The following is an excerpt from that letter:

"Arts in Common is valuable in many ways. First of all, as a single parent with one household income this allows me to afford the same opportunities as others in more affluent areas and neighborhoods. Dance teaches discipline, concentration and more importantly allows every child to dream through music and dance. The program allows children to open their imagination and a whole world of possibilities, giving a boost of confidence and encouragement.

Children are faced with many challenges. As a foster parent I have witnessed children who have been abused, physically, mentally and neglected. Your programs bring hope.

Thank you for allowing kids to soar!"
