Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery to Present "Artists of the Winding Road A-Z"

Seven Appalachian Ohio Artists to Engage in Lectures, Demonstrations

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery will present Artists of the Winding Road A-Z, April 7-April 23, an exhibition spotlighting the community of creatives guiding Appalachian Ohio to civic recovery and renovation through the arts.

Painters, ceramists, and sculptors from Athens to Zanesville create a wide range of contemporary art and fine craft. Seven of those artists come together in Artists of the Winding Road A-Z, curated by Susan K. Gottlieb of Zanesville, Ohio. This exhibition includes free opportunities for the public to interact and learn about the artists, their processes, and the region’s influence on their work.

Paul Emory, Painter | Monday, April 11, noon–1 p.m.
Paul Emory will lead a conversation about his recent assembled pieces, their construction, and their relationships to his timeless paintings.

Alan Cottrill, Bronze Sculptor | Tuesday, April 12, noon–1 p.m.
National award-winner Alan Cottrill, for whom sculpture is a second career, will speak about his approach to his subjects and his artistic philosophy. His masterpiece of Thomas Alva Edison, which has been on display in the Ohio Statehouse rotunda since last summer, is slated for permanent installation in the U.S. Capitol Building during April.

John Taylor-Lehman, Found Object Sculptor | Friday, April 15, noon–1 p.m.
Emphasizing the environmental aspects of his art, John Taylor-Lehman will discuss his transition from talented amateur to exhibiting professional artist whose works in the folk art tradition are now sought after and collected.

Michael Seiler, Painter | Thursday, April 21, noon–1 p.m
A vastly experienced teacher and lecturer, Michael Seiler will give a presentation focusing on the evolution of his asphalt and alkyd paintings, engaging the audience through questions and answers and offering suggestions for individual artistic expression.

Live Portrait Painting | Wednesday, April 13, 11:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
Ohio State Senator Troy Balderson will sit for his portrait executed by internationally renowned Muskingum University Professor Yan Sun.

Live Portrait Painting | Friday, April 22, noon–1 p.m.
Ohio Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger will sit for his portrait executed by internationally renowned Muskingum University Professor Yan Sun.

Kelsey Duncan, Ceramist
Live Pottery Demonstration | Tuesday, April 19, noon–1 p.m.
Athens artist Kelsey Duncan will demonstrate basic techniques for ceramic production. He will also discuss his own artistic vision and inspirations behind his evocative works.

Riffe Gallery admission, events, and programming are free and open to the public.

LOBBY EXHIBITION
Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio | 2016 Excellence Award Winners
The Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts is an online undergraduate student arts competition presented by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio. The OAC’s Riffe Gallery will display the 2016 finalists in the first floor lobby of the Riffe Center, April 1 – May 5. More information at aicuoartaward.com.
