| Home | About OAC | Public Value | Specific Public Value January 2007 Public Value StoriesEver since I was a little girl, art has had a huge impact on my life. My Mother and Father met in the theatre. Mom is a vocal instructor and Dad works part-time as a disc jockey. They enriched my childhood with a multitude of varying art forms. Despite growing up in a small town setting, my siblings and I were given the opportunity to take music and dance lessons. I learned to play the violin, viola, piano and flute. I took part in multiple dance competitions and workshops. My parents also encouraged us to participate in theatre and the local youth orchestra. Of my own curiosity, I began to explore the visual arts as well. Since then, I have begun to realize the impact that the arts have had on my life. In middle school I would relate back, instinctively, to my music training in my math classes. My eye-hand coordination and body movements came in handy during gym class and in my everyday life. Stage fright is practically non-existent to me and my ability to pick up on the world around me and relate to other people is useful no matter where I am working or studying. Now I am attending Columbus College of Art and Design where I am finding out that you need all of the skills that I feel were enhanced by my work with the arts. Overall, without these experiences, I would not be the person that I am today. Art brings the people in our world to life. The skills we gain from it improve our lives, enrich our culture, and expand our way of seeing the world and ourselves in ways that I do not believe we can ever truly comprehend. -Sarah Wise, Columbus If you would like to share your public value story please e-mail Jami Goldstein at jami.goldstein@oac.state.oh.us.
